Eurovision Song Contest 2022: This is how Germany’s participants were chosen

In previous years, a jury decided which act should represent Germany at the ESC. In 2022, on the other hand, it was the fans who were allowed to vote again. 50 percent flowed into the result via online voting – the other 50 percent via phone call or SMS directly during the preliminary decision. Since February 28th, the acts have also had the opportunity to mobilize their own fan base so that more voices come together.

When the candidates were allowed to appear was decided in advance by drawing lots. First, Malik Harris performed his song “Rockstars”. Then it was Maël & Jonas’ turn with “I Swear To God”, followed by Eros Atomus with “Alive” and Emily Roberts performing her song “Soap”. Felicia Lu then performed her song “Anxiety” and Nico Suave & Team Liebe ended the live part with their performance of “Hallo Welt”. They were all able to perform in front of small audiences. The spectators present were able to secure one of the tickets, which were severely limited due to the corona pandemic.

ESC preliminary decision 2022: This is how the candidates were determined

A total of 944 acts have applied to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 by November 30, 2021. For the first time, in addition to the German ESC delegation (Head Alexandra Wolfslast), a jury with experts from the radio stations Antenne Brandenburg, Bayern 3, Bremen Vier, Hr3, MDR Jump, NDR 2, SR 1, SWR3 and WDR 2 decided which bands and songs Germany could be represented in the competition.
