A man who was born in 1879 in the fledgling German Empire and who died 76 years later in the Federal Republic of Germany has, by definition, been through a lot. Certainly if the person concerned was stationed as a naval doctor in Namibia (former German Southwest Africa) during the – forcefully crushed – uprising of the Herero, was sent to China after the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion, during the First World War behind the front in Flanders. patched up severely wounded soldiers, then witnessed multiple regime changes in Germany, and finally a devastating world war.
