Erik ten Hag on his way to Manchester United: coach and club agree in outline | Dutch football

Erik ten Hag (52) will almost certainly be the new manager of Manchester United. The English giant has broadly reached an agreement on a long-term collaboration with the Ajax coach. A complete deal is expected soon.

There was no talk of a deal last week, but Ten Hag reached an oral agreement with Manchester United at the beginning of this week about a long-term cooperation. Due to the agreement in principle, the success coach leaves Ajax after 4.5 years to start working at Old Trafford.

That switch had been in the air for a while, but Ten Hag wanted to have a say in the player policy of the fallen English superpower. The Mancunians currently occupy seventh place in the Premier League. United sees in Ten Hag the manager who can push the club back to the English and European top.

RB Leipzig thought they could put a stop to that. The German top club reported for Ten Hag at the beginning of this month. After a stiff first conversation, the club management of RB Leipzig announced that they wanted to comply with the wishes of the Tukker.

In vain, now it appears that Ten Hag is taking up the challenge in Manchester. For this he wants to be flanked by former FC Twente coach Steve McClaren and Ajax assistant Mitchell van der Gaag. Robin van Persie is also one of the potential staff members, but Brexit makes it difficult to switch from the former United striker.

It is expected that in the coming days the last folds (including the transfer fee for Ajax) will be ironed out and the paperwork will be further prepared, but that the official announcement of both clubs will in any case be lifted over the cup final next Sunday. Ten Hag himself brushed off all questions about an alleged switch to Manchester United in recent weeks. ,,I only focus on the finals with Ajax”, he said several times.

Ten Hag wants to seize his third national double at Ajax. The final of the TOTO KNVB Cup against PSV awaits on Sunday, against whom the team from Amsterdam also defends a four-point lead in the last month of the Eredivisie. The coach arrived in 2018, after which he quickly formed a successful duo with the now resigned director Marc Overmars. The duo helped Ajax to a national and European advance.

Ten Hag started ten years ago as head coach of Go Ahead Eagles, which he guided back to the Eredivisie in his first and last season after seventeen years. He then moved to the Bayern Munich reserves, also to take a look behind the scenes of a European superpower and of success coach Pep Guardiola. Ten Hag switched to FC Utrecht after two years, which he brought back to the Dutch sub-top.
