A striking transfer this summer was that of Erik Schouten. The defender from Westwoud left Eredivisionist Cambuur as captain and signed a three-year contract with First Divisionist Willem II. “It was maybe time for a new adventure.”
“We have found our place in Tilburg”, Erik Schouten tells NH Sport about his new environment. Until now he always lived in West Friesland. “This is indeed a different environment, but I feel at home here. That is also because of playing football every day. I actually don’t have time to miss my family and friends.”
“Great Years”
In 2019 Schouten made the switch from FC Volendam to Cambuur. In Leeuwarden, he became an important pillar of support and even wore the captain’s armband. “I have had three great years at Cambuur.” The thirty-year-old defender took the title twice with the Frisians and surprisingly finished ninth in the Eredivisie last season. “We did an excellent job as a team and I also showed myself well individually.”
“I must confess that I expected more appreciation”
Cambuur only extended the contract for one season, with an option for another season if maintained. And that went wrong with Schouten. “I have to admit that I expected more appreciation given my performance for the club.”

“bigger club”
“Now I have actually opted for a bigger club and for more security with this three-year contract.” Nevertheless, the transition remains striking. Erik Schouten made it clear exactly one year ago that after many years in the first division he was very curious about the highest podium. “I have also thought about that, but after listing all the pros and cons, this is the best choice. And with Willem II I want to return to the Eredivisie next season.”
The preparation is almost over. Tomorrow Erik Schouten will play the last practice match with the Tilburgers, the opponent will then be Belgium’s Lommel. Willem II then opens the season with a home game against Jong PSV. “I’m really looking forward to that.”
