Eric Dier hopes to find his way back into the English national team via FC Bayern. “Considering who I play for and I’m really happy with how I’ve played so far, it should all be in my favor,” the 30-year-old said in an interview with the newspaper. The Times“.
Dier played 49 times for the Three Lions, most recently in the World Cup round of 16 against Senegal in December 2022. He has not been called up to the squad since last March and, according to his own statements, has had no contact with national coach Gareth Southgate. “I would love nothing more than to be back in the England squad,” emphasized the defender. The 49 international matches are an “annoying number”.
Until he moved to Munich, he did not expect that the national team would become an issue for the defender again. “Back in November I never thought I would be in this position. In the six months at Tottenham I trained hard every day and kept myself fit. But you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. It looks completely dark. Having that blind faith and just staying fit, staying healthy, staying professional – that’s what I’m most proud of,” he said.
From the Premier League to FC Bayern: Dier number eight
Dier has played eight games for FC Bayern so far, including six from the start, including the 3-0 win against Lazio in the Champions League. He was initially loaned out until the end of the season, but in the summer he will move permanently to Munich. His contract then runs until 2025. The Munich team will not pay a transfer fee for Dier because his contract with Tottenham Hotspur would have expired anyway. However, according to “Sky”, the German record champions are paying a total amount of up to 3 million or 3.5 million euros for the loan. Initially it was written that Dier would cost 4 million euros.
Eric Dier on Tuchel’s departure from FC Bayern: “Everyone knows how football works”
Dier has played for Spurs since 2014 and was a long-time starter, but with the arrival of coach Ange Postecoglou in the summer he lost his regular place. Nevertheless, Dier only has words of praise for the Australian: “I really enjoyed working with Postecoglou for six months. I learned so much. If I were a coach, my style would be most similar to Postecoglou’s.”
With regard to his current coach Thomas Tuchel, who will be leaving the club at the end of the season, Dier said: “We all know how football works. It was a very difficult month, also in terms of results.” A coach only has to leave “because things aren’t going well, unless you’re Klopp. But as a player it is always important to have the humility to look at yourself in the mirror before looking elsewhere,” he stressed.
Despite being ten points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, Dier enjoys the pressure at his new club: “The great expectations are what makes it so nice to be a part of it. You expect to win the league.” Dier describes the hustle and bustle surrounding the Munich season as normal: “That’s how it is for a club of this size.”
