Clapton live in 1994 at the Fillmore, San Francisco. This is how cultural appropriation can sound: raw and concentrated as a marrow bone, also thanks to the band around pianist Chris Stainton and drummer Andy Newmark. And yet, as close as Clapton comes to his idols here, as much as he immerses himself in this music as a guitarist – there is always a touch of futility, especially when Clapton sings with such forced singing as he often does.
“Authenticity” vs. self-empowerment
Suffice it to watch the fantastic sequences of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy etc. in the companion documentary by Martin Scorsese. Or the dress code of the protagonists: Clapton sweats in a T-shirt, his role models do it in fine thread. “Authenticity” vs. self-empowerment.
