Eric Adams, New York’s new mayor, was sworn in shortly after midnight (local time) in Times Square, despite criticism, during the traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations. Images show how the 15,000 attendees are covered in confetti.
Normally, about 60,000 people attend New Year’s Eve in Times Square, but that has been drastically reduced due to the corona pandemic. All attendees older than 5 years had to be able to demonstrate that they have been vaccinated against the corona virus.
A senior executive of the Manhattan borough, Mark Levine, called Adams’ inauguration in Times Square earlier this week irresponsible. “We need to do more to stop the virus. Unfortunately, because of that, I don’t think we can allow an audience at the Times Square event,” Levine told The New York Times. Epidemiologist Wafaa El-Sadr also expressed her doubts in the newspaper. “Even with all the measures, all those present run a high risk of contamination.”
However, previous mayor Bill de Blasio approved the New Years Eve events. “We have to show that we are moving forward.” Black Eric Adams is the 110th mayor of the American city. He is the second black mayor in New York history.
Adams was mayor of Brooklyn for the past few years. His first challenge will be to fight the corona pandemic in the metropolis. In addition, Adams also faces an important economic challenge, namely the economic recovery of the metropolis. He is also eagerly awaited how he will deal with the criticized behavior of the New York police.
