The intention of the Republicans is that, now that the Lower House has given the green light, all their interventions will be exclusively in the Catalan language “without exception”

The general secretary of ERC, Marta Rovira, has asked the deputies and senators of her party in Madrid this Saturday to use only Catalan in all his activity both in Congress and in the Senate, a guideline that includes both plenary sessions and commissions. Thus, the intention of the Republicans is that, now that the Lower House has given the green light for all languages to be used in parliament even before the reform of the regulations to regulate their use is approved, all their interventions are exclusively in Catalan and “without exception”.

It will be starting next week, in the plenary session scheduled for Tuesday the 19th and Thursday the 21st precisely to approve this change, when members of Congress will be able to speak without hindrance Catalan, Galician and Basque, in addition to Aragonese or Asturian, which are not co-official, but they will also be allowed during the session. This new scenario will already be fully valid in the investiture session of the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, which will begin on the 26th.

The normalization of Catalan in the lower house was one of the ‘sine qua non’ conditions that the independentists set to support the presidency of Francina Armengol, who from his first intervention committed to expedite the use of all official languages in the chamber. In fact, the hiring of translators and regulatory reform have accelerated despite the technical doubts expressed by Congressional lawyers, since it must also guarantee translation to all parliamentarians. Both the PP and Vox have rejected the measure.

The order that ERC has given implies that its leaders will not use Spanish in none of his interventions, nor did his spokesperson, Gabriel Rufián, which is precisely a profile that the Republicans opted for in order to penetrate new voters with Spanish as their mother tongue.

After having achieved this milestone in Congress, the hot potato is now in the use of Catalan in the European Parliamentanother of the conditions that were agreed upon by the independentists and that will be debated on Tuesday amid multiple misgivings on the part of the member states, since to make the measure effective there must be unanimity that, for now, is far away.
