The Equestrian Center Emmen in Erica has been closed since Wednesday because a contagious disease for horses has been detected.
One of the boarding ponies has strangles. This is a bacterial infection of the respiratory tract that causes inflammation in the lymph nodes. Horses can become very ill and in some cases die.
To prevent further spread, the equestrian center has decided, in consultation with the veterinarian, to temporarily close completely. Horses are no longer allowed on and off the site. Classes and competitions will not take place until further notice.
