Enrico Maassen from BVB II is probably the top candidate for a coaching position at FC Augsburg

Led team in 3rd division

The search for a coach at FC Augsburg is apparently on the home straight. As “Bild” and “Sport Bild” reporter Tobias Altschäffl reportst, Enrico Maassen from Borussia Dortmund’s second team is a top candidate to succeed Markus Weinzierl. Accordingly, details are still to be clarified.

The 38-year-old, in whom other unnamed clubs are said to be interested, has been in charge of the Black and Yellows since 2020 and in his first year in office led the team to promotion to the 3rd division, where they finished ninth this season . Overall, Maassen, for whom FCA would be his first coaching position in the Bundesliga, has an average of 1.87 points in 76 games. Since his contract is valid until 2024, a fee will be charged.

Most recently, the Fuggerstadt residents were also associated with Peter Zeidler (to the news). The 59-year-old has been coaching the Swiss first division club FC St. Gallen 1879 since 2018, where he is still under contract until 2025. According to Altschäffl, unlike Sebastian Hoeneß, he was never an issue. However, the former TSG Hoffenheim coach is out of the question as he is taking a break for the time being.

Weinzierl announced his departure after FC Augsburg’s last Bundesliga game on May 14 against SpVgg Greuther Fürth (2-1). He did not inform managing director Stefan Reuter about his step beforehand. According to Weinzierl, there had been no talks about an extension of his contract, which was due in the summer, until the season finale.
