Enkhuizer politically reacts shocked to the sudden death of councilor Chris Segerius

The news that Chris Segerius has passed away was announced to the councilors of Enkhuizen on Thursday. Bob Sikkema, who has been installed on the board of Enkhuizen on behalf of the Pirate Party, tells the editors of WEEFF/NH News that he was very touched by the sudden death of the 78-year-old blogger and politician.

“I am mainly concerned with his wife and children. That of course in the first place,” says Sikkema. “But we will also miss him terribly in politics. We have learned a lot from him as a party in recent years, and we had the same fascination for many things.”

One of these things is the recreation area in Enkhuizen, which Chris has championed for years and even ended up in the city council as a result. “He was very informed about the content and made a strong case for the citizens,” says Sikkema. “I like that, when someone is really fighting for something. That’s how Chris was.”

The councilor says he will miss a sparring partner in the Enkhuizer council in the coming years and will continue to fight for transparency, also about the Enkhuizerzand recreation area. “With his victory during the last election, he made himself immortal. What he did was quite an achievement. We will certainly not lose his vote about Enkhuizerzand.”

Also on behalf of the council, Enkhuizer mayor Eduard van Zuijlen says he is very shocked by the sudden death of the newly installed councilor. “Our thoughts first go out to his wife and family,” says Van Zuijlen. “We wish them a lot of strength in bearing this loss.”

The mayor also says that he has lost a very enthusiastic and striking councilor in Segerius, who has managed to leave his mark on politics in Enkhuizen in a short time.

But what does the death of Segerius mean for his seat on the council, which he won with the elections last month? During his election stunt His List Segerius already won two seats in the Enkhuizer city council, one of which returned had to be because Chris was the only candidate on his list.

A spokesperson for the municipality says that, after having carried out the necessary investigation, there is an exceptional situation. Since there was no number two on the list, and no successors have been appointed to the party, his seat will remain empty until the next election.

“It will be very strange to see that his seat will remain empty in the coming years. But with the death of Chris, there is a blank list,” said the spokesman. “As a municipality, we have such a large council that the seat cannot be filled by another party. With a smaller number of seats in the council, that would have been a possibility.”
