This was announced by Eni, the Mediterranean country’s most important gas importer, on Saturday. The Russian energy group GAZPROM has announced that it will provide gas “to the extent of the past few days”. On Friday, Russia had promised only 50 percent of the 63 million cubic meters of gas ordered, according to the state-owned company Eni. According to the gas network operator Snam, almost 35 million cubic meters of gas then flowed.
In view of the development, the Italian government is planning an emergency meeting next week. Roberto Cingolani, the minister for ecological transition, is considering upgrading the situation in Italy from the pre-alert status to the alert phase. In concrete terms, this does not change much in terms of the effects on the population and the energy industry. The state would only intervene massively in the market if the emergency were to be declared in the next step.
After his visit to Kyiv, Prime Minister Mario Draghi clearly rejected GAZPROM’s justification that the reason for the cutbacks for several European countries was repair work. “We think that’s a lie,” he said. “In reality, the gas here is used politically.”
