David Wagner is the new coach of the English second division soccer team Norwich City. The 51-year-old was given a 12-month contract, as the “canaries” informed.

Wagner succeeds Dean Smith, who was fired at the end of December. Most recently, Wagner coached the Swiss first division club Young Boys Bern before he was put on leave at the beginning of March 2022 and has been without a club since then. Before that, he was under contract with FC Schalke 04 for a good year. He was released from the “Knappen” at the end of September 2020.

Wagner: “A great honor”

“It’s a very special and proud moment for me. It’s a great honor to be back in England as Norwich City’s head coach,” said Wagner.

For Wagner it is the second station in England. From November 2015 to January 2019 he coached Huddersfield Town and made it to the top with the club in 2017 premier league. Before Wagner there was already a German coach from Norwich: The current Mönchengladbach head coach Daniel Farke even managed to get promoted twice with the club.

Norwich is currently only eleventh in the championship, the goal of direct promotion is already 15 points behind second Sheffield United in danger. “We now have to look ahead and work extremely hard,” said Wagner.
