With videoEngland has qualified as the ninth country for the European Football Championship in Germany. Partly thanks to two goals from Harry Kane, the cracker against Italy was won 3-1 at Wembley. The question is therefore whether Italy can defend its European title next year.
An additional problem for Italy is that rival Ukraine won 1-3 against Malta and thus took over second place in Group C. Ukraine is now in second place with 13 points above Italy, which played one match less. The Italians remain in third place with 10 points, while England is certain of the European Championship with 16 points. Italy and Ukraine will play each other in the last qualifying match on November 20.
Only the top two countries in each group qualify directly for the European Championship. However, there is still a possible lifeline from the Nations League play-offs. The last three tickets can be distributed there.
Watch Harry Kane make the decision.
Italy still takes the lead
Italy took the lead after fifteen minutes, completely against the flow of the game. While England attacked, coach Luciano Spalletti’s team countered to score the opening goal. Gianluca Scamacca scored from close range after preparatory work by Giovanni Di Lorenzo. Immediately afterwards England increased the pressure. After almost half an hour, Jude Bellingham broke through the Italian defense and was awarded a penalty after a tackle by Di Lorenzo. Harry Kane took advantage of this and scored his sixtieth goal for England: 1-1.
After the break, England took the lead after a quick counter. Bellingham kept the ball in English possession, after which Marcus Rashford shot in hard after a good move: 2-1. Fifteen minutes before the end, Harry Kane also made it 3-1 after a great individual action.
Hungary misses the first ‘match point’
Hungary has not yet managed to qualify for the European Championship. The leader in group G was stuck at 2-2 against Lithuania in Kaunas. With a win, the Hungarians would have qualified for the European Championship, also because Serbia won 3-1 against Montenegro. But the first ‘match point’ remained unused.
Hungary has 14 points from six games, Serbia 13 points from seven games and Montenegro 8 points from six games.
Fiodor Cernych gave Lithuania the lead with a fine shot after being sent off by Edvinas Girdvainis following a quick takeover. Pijus Sirvys headed in the second goal from a corner. Dominik Szoboszlai did something back from a penalty in the second half and Barnabás Varga equalized, but a Hungarian victory failed to materialize.
Aleksandar Mitrovic gave Serbia the lead against Montenegro with a good shot in Belgrade. Stevan Jovetic equalized with an equally beautiful goal from the left. Mitrovic scored the 2-1 in the second half on a pass from former Ajax player Dusan Tadic. A few minutes later it was the other way around. Tadic shot in after being dropped by Mitrovic.
Danes escape disgrace
Slovenia and Denmark are close to qualification. The Slovenians won 0-1 against Northern Ireland. Denmark escaped an embarrassment against San Marino: 1-2.
Denmark struggled to score. Just before half-time, Rasmus Højlund managed to pass goalkeeper Elia Benedettini with a hard shot from the left. However, the Danes saw Alessandro Golinucci score the equalizer after an hour through a leg from captain Simon Kjaer. Substitute Yussuf Poulsen headed Denmark back into the lead.
Slovenia and Denmark both have 19 points from eight games in Group H with six countries. Kazakhstan is third with 15 points from eight matches after the win against Finland earlier in the day. Kazakhstan won 1-2 thanks to two late goals from Baktiyor Zaynutdinov. Robert Taylor had opened the score for the Finns, who no longer have a chance of winning the European Championship after the defeat.
