England opened the European Championships with a win – Old Trafford sold out

England, which is one of the champions’ favorites, won the opening match of the Women’s European Football Championship with Austria’s goals 1–0.

The only goal of the match was scored in the 16th minute.

Star player by Beth Mead lift over the Austrian goalkeeper by Manuela Zinsberger bounce towards an empty goal, but a topper Carina Wenninger had time to kick it through the top bar back onto the field – or not at all. The goal camera technology said that the entire ball had crossed the goal line in the air: 1–0 to England.

Manchester’s Old Trafford was sold out for the match, which means nearly 77,000 spectators.

Finland will face Spain in its first match on Friday.
