The former Turkish center of the Celtics opposed the Turkish leader in the media, called him “Hitler” and took a US passport, changing his surname to Freedom: “Sometimes taking a position counts more than salary”
“Sometimes taking a position is more important than the next paycheck.” He commented on Enes Freedom (born Enes Kanter) his candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize. “I am honored”, added the center, an American citizen since 2021 after the withdrawal of citizenship by Turkey, which over the years has fought numerous battles in opposition to the Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan, whom he defined “the Hitler of our century”. In addition, he has repeatedly reported and criticized China’s numerous human rights violations. Not only was Kanter proposed by a Norwegian member of parliament, but 30 other Nobel laureates wrote a letter asking the Boston Celtics to take him back to the team “to be on the right side of history”. After moving to the Houston Rockets, Freedom was in fact released from the club 4 days later, and will continue his career in Greece
Withdrawal of citizenship
–
Enes had harshly criticized Erdogan already in 2016, at the time of the failed military coup against him. The following year, due to the withdrawal of citizenship, he had become stateless. He was until November 29, 2021, when he received American citizenship, taking the surname Freedom in place of the original Kanter, having also been disowned by his family. Not only that: an extradition request from the Turkish government hangs on him, and in 2019 – when he was playing in Portland – he had not even gone to Toronto for fear of being arrested. Over the years Freedoom has been the victim of numerous death threats and an attempted kidnapping in Indonesia, while his father has been arrested and imprisoned for 7 years. A full-blown persecution, but as he himself has said several times: “Freedom is not free”
