Endangered animals of sand on display in GaiaZOO | 1Limburg

GaiaZOO has officially added new animals from Thursday, but they are made of sand. The sand sculpture festival ZAND ZOO puts endangered animal species on the map.

Ten artists have been working on the ten sand sculptures over the past six weeks. Visitors to the zoo could see with their own eyes how these were made from grain into full-fledged sand sculptures.

Vulnerable animal species
These include the endangered acorn mouse and a colony of Barbary macaques made of sand. There is also a sand sculpture of the living planet Gaia, which refers to the name of GaiaZOO. Sand artist Roger Geraedts is proud that he and the team can tell stories about vulnerable animal species in a special way. “In GaiaZOO you experience how special our earth is. Nature is so beautiful, perfectly organized and wonderful, but our planet is also incredibly vulnerable.”

Special protective layer
In total, 300 tons of sand from Limburg soil was used for the sand sculpture festival. A special protective layer ensures that the sand sculptures are resistant to wind and weather.

The ten works of art can be seen in the Kerkrade zoo until the autumn.
