End of discussion on widening Schipdonk Canal?
Four parties are asking the Flemish government to draw up a new spatial plan that includes the deletion of the so-called reservation strips, and a new destination for those grounds. In this way, the owners would finally have legal certainty after almost 50 years.
Reservation strips were provided in the 1970s in order to widen a canal. The carrying capacity for the widening of the Schipdonk Canal has now completely ebbed away. There are sufficient alternatives to further open up Zeebrugge.
After fifty years, the new spatial plan will finally provide legal certainty to the owners of the land. More than 1,100 hectares in East and West Flanders can now be repurposed.
