End of Amsterdam formation: PvdA, GroenLinks and D66 reach agreement

PvdA, GroenLinks and D66 have reached a coalition agreement in Amsterdam after weeks of negotiations. The three parties that will form the Amsterdam city council will unfold their plans for the capital on Wednesday morning. That happens at primary school ‘t Koggeschip in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, reports the PvdA faction. Then the new aldermen’s team will also be presented.

Municipal elections were held in mid-March. Not long after, it became clear that PvdA, GroenLinks and D66 would form a new coalition. Negotiations then continued for weeks.

The PvdA was the winner of the Amsterdam elections with nine seats, followed by GroenLinks (eight seats) and D66 (seven seats). The three parties together have a majority in the Amsterdam council, which has 45 seats. The three were also part of the previous city council, which also included the SP.

Last month, informants Roos Vermeij and Lodewijk Asscher expressed their expectation that the formation of a new city council would not be completed until early June. At the time, they pointed out, among other things, that there were uncertainties about the financial resources from the government.
