End of a great football career: Babett Peter stops

Long-serving national soccer player Babett Peter has announced the end of her long, extremely successful career.

The 33-year-old wrote on her Instagram account that an “unforgettable journey” will end in the summer. Peter has been playing in Spain for three years, first with CD Tacon, which was then taken over by Real Madrid two years ago. “I’d like to be able to decide for myself when I retire – and now is the time after a very successful season as Real Madrid captain,” wrote Peter.

The defender from Oschatz near Leipzig has achieved a large number of successes. In 118 international matches with the German national team, she became Olympic champion, world and European champion and also won Olympic bronze. From 2006 to 2012 she played for 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, became champion five times, won the DFB Cup once and won the Champions League in 2010. After stint at 1. FFC Frankfurt (2012 to 2014/one cup win), she moved to VfL Wolfsburg and won three championships and five cups with them.

Peter is engaged to former American soccer player Ella Masar, with whom she played one season in Wolfsburg, and will be moving in with her in the United States after the season.
