Empty shelves due to farmers protest, 50 skippers are stuck, and Drenthe throws the nitrogen map in the trash | daily overview Tuesday 5 July

Supermarkets are faced with empty shelves due to blockades by angry farmers. Vegetables, fruit, meat and dairy are no longer available in some places. There are also blockades at the bridge over the Van Starkenborgh Canal in Gaarkeuken: 50 skippers were trapped there. And the province of Drenthe throws the nitrogen map in the trash. Here’s the news you (possibly) missed today.

Empty shelves due to farmer’s protest

Supermarkets are left with empty shelves due to blockages from angry farmers. For the second day in a row, food distribution has been disrupted, leaving gaps in the shelves. Vegetables, fruit, meat and dairy are no longer available in some places. Hoarding customers haven’t been spotted yet, but that could change soon.

Farmers break up blockades at distribution centers in Drenthe

For a while it seemed that the protest would last for days, but it did not come to that: on Tuesday morning at nine o’clock, protesting farmers and sympathizers ended the blockade at the Jumbo distribution center in Beilen and that of Coop in Gieten. After 29 hours the tractors are gone, but the men are not satisfied. “Why did we break up? That had to be yes.”

Farmers block bridge at Gaarkeuken: 50 skippers are stuck

Where blockades at the distribution centers of Coop in Gieten and Jumbo in Beilen have ended, Farmers and sympathizers at Gaarkeuken occupy the bridge over the Van Starkenborgh Canal all day long † According to Rijkswaterstaat, about 50 skippers were stuck on the entire route between Friesland and Germany. Mayor Ard van der Tuuk issued an ultimatum to the farmers: they had to release the bridge again at 6 p.m. The farmers complied with this and departed punctually with their vehicles towards Boerakker.

Drenthe throws nitrogen map in the trash

The province of Drenthe is not going to work with the infamous map of the Ministry of Agriculture that states per nature area by what percentage the nitrogen emissions will be reduced. According to deputy Henk Jumelet (CDA), it has become apparent that this map causes more problems than it solves. “Farmers see that card. If there are ten of them in a certain area and need to reduce emissions by 70 percent, they conclude that seven of them should stop.”
