Empty bladder increases accident survival | Medical advice

Will you be in the car for a long time soon? Then it’s best to pee before you leave. It is not only annoying to sit in the car with a full bladder, but it can also cause more serious injuries in an accident, claims TikTokker ‘Med Explained 2 You’.

On the TikTok account ‘Med Explained 2 You’, a medical assistant gives all kinds of medical advice. He recently gave the tip not to jump into the car with a full bladder. Not because it is annoying, but because it would increase the chances of survival in a car accident.

“Your bladder is like a balloon,” he explains. “So when you hold your urine, that balloon is more inflated.” According to the TikTokker, you are more likely to have a tear in the peritoneum in a car accident with a full bladder. That can lead to a quick death, he claims. With an empty bladder, the chance of rupture would be less.

TikTok is obviously not a reliable source for medical advice, but according to MedScape, an online resource for doctors and medical staff, a full bladder is more susceptible to injury than an empty bladder. These injuries can be caused, among other things, by a car accident. According to the Urology Care Foundation, the bones of the pelvis protect an empty bladder from blows to the lower abdomen. When the bladder fills, the top of the bladder ends up in the abdomen and is therefore less protected.

Urology Care adds that bladder trauma from a car accident can be avoided by properly wearing the seat belt. “The seat belt should be worn like a lap belt and not across the stomach. In a car accident, passengers with a full bladder wearing a seatbelt can feel the force of the impact on their full bladder.”
