The fire in a bulb shed on Herenweg in Heemstede has caused extensive damage to the halls. Employee Jacco van de Berg watches helplessly as the company, where he has enjoyed working for years, goes up in flames. “This always happens to someone else and now you’re the sack yourself.”
Employee Jacco van de Berg has worked almost all his life at the bulb company in Heemstede. Visibly emotional, he tells reporter Bart van Zutphen how he and a colleague discovered the fire this morning.
“When I arrived at work around half past six, a colleague said that a fire had started in the shed. After we discovered where the fire came from, we immediately started extinguishing.”
According to Jacco, the fire started in one of the cold stores. “We couldn’t get the fire under control ourselves. The bulbs are stored in crates of wood and plastic. The fire quickly spread because of the polystyrene foam in the walls. In Dutch, this sucks with seven o’s”
Part shed removed
The fire brigade is currently in the process of removing part of the shed, so that the fire cannot spread further.

To get to the seat of the fire, the cold stores must first be pulled apart. This can cause the fire and smoke to flare up again, explains Dick Kol, spokesman for the security region. “We are still working for hours and the fire is far from being mastered. To be able to fight the fire better, we will go inside with a robot.”
Woke up with stench
Reporter Niels van Steijn says that local residents woke up this morning from the stench. “When we looked outside, we saw a gigantic cloud of smoke. We are not exactly reassured: our houses are about twenty meters away from the fire.”
