Last weekend, Storm Elin caused enormous damage to the tent where the Christmas circus in Haarlem will take place. The organization was already aware of the storm, but did not expect the tent to sustain so much damage. “Suddenly there was that gust of wind you were so afraid of.”
As a precaution, the organization stayed at the tent all night to keep an eye on it, but could not prevent the roof from being completely destroyed. “Then you see the consequences and a lot goes through your mind,” says circus producer René Duursma.
The Christmas circus is there for the thirtieth time. That should have been a special and festive moment. “An anniversary year. When something like this happens, it does something to you,” says Duursma. “I dare say that we all shed some tears.”
The organization does receive a lot of support from local residents. From drawings to snacks and drinks. “It shows that it is alive, and that feels like a warm blanket.”
