Emmen will definitely not open emergency shelters for asylum seekers

There will definitely be no emergency shelter for asylum seekers in Emmen. This is what the municipal executive writes in a letter to the municipal council.

This week the college was surprised by reports that the COA would like to open an emergency shelter in Emmen. After that, several discussions were held with the Ministry of Justice and Security. But despite the fact that the municipal council finds it unacceptable that hundreds of people have to sleep on a lawn in front of the asylum seekers’ center in Ter Apel because there is no shelter for them, the municipality is not giving in.

According to the college, Emmen has been taking its responsibility for years. “We are making a significant contribution to the asylum chain with a COA family location, which has recently been expanded. In addition, we have lent a helping hand several times in the past year by offering (crisis) emergency shelter”, write B and W. As a municipality, we are literally the last station before the registration center in Ter Apel, which requires the necessary commitment from both the police and the municipality. We also temporarily house the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP) street of the neighboring municipality of Westerwolde. the reception of hundreds of refugees from Ukraine.”

The municipality therefore believes that it is already making an enormous effort. “The impact of an overflow location is also great. We also do not have a suitable location available in the short term. All things considered, we informed the ministry this afternoon that we do not want to realize an overflow location in our municipality.”
