Emmen says goodbye to Lukkien: ‘It’s all about football, but there must also be a portion of humor’

FOOTBALL – It is not yet known who will be at the helm of FC Emmen next year, but one fact is certain: the home match against Almere City FC is the last match as Emmen coach for Dick Lukkien. Can the coach keep his club, where he has been in the group since 2016, from relegation? It would not be Lukkien’s first piece of art at FC Emmen, but his last.

Without experience as a head coach, FC Emmen decided on March 14, 2016 to appoint Lukkien. The then 44-year-old Winschoter succeeded Gert Heerkes, who finished the season as an interim in 2016, after Marcel Keizer made the switch to Cambuur Leeuwarden halfway through.

Until then, Lukkien had been an assistant at BV Veendam for eight years, the team where he also played football for three years, and five years at FC Groningen, where he will return after this season. Jan Korte has known Lukkien since he was sixteen, when he was in the A-selection of BV Veendam. “When I later became a trainer at Appingedam, I asked Dick to become a player and head of youth academy. After five years I became a trainer at Veendam and took Dick with me as an assistant,” says the current FC Emmen scout.

Korte soon realized that Lukkien was perfect as a trainer. “He analyzes excellently, is down-to-earth and believes in his own way of playing.” After things got worse with Veendam, Korte advised that Lukkien should go to FC Groningen.
