Emmen and school foundation fight money issue at Council of State

The municipality of Emmen has not spent more money on its own public education than on special education. The municipality argued this at the Council of State today.

By law, the municipality must give the same amount of money to special schools as to public education. The Catholic school foundation Primenius took this matter to court in January 2019. It decided that Emmen had given public schools more than a million euros more in the first five years of this century than to special education.

Emmen appealed against that decision. The province of Drenthe supports the municipality in this. “We do not see any exceedance,” said a spokesperson. Everything in the bookkeeping is correct, according to the two governments.

Primenius is also not satisfied with the earlier RvS ruling. The school foundation wants to know how much money they still owe. That is now unclear, a former director of the school organization indicated. He has been doing it since 2009 and is now retired. ”What we have achieved in any case is that the municipality of Emmen will now send us the five-year account. That didn’t happen at first.”

Primenius has asked the Council of State to declare Emmen’s appeal unfounded. Verdict in a few weeks.
