Emma Plasschaert elected Ostend sportswoman of 2022

With these trophies, the city of Ostend wants to put its athletes and sports teams in the spotlight. For this edition, the sports performance between September 2021 and August 2022 was looked at.

The trophy for the best Ostend sportswoman goes to Emma Plasschaert. The sailors became world champions for the second time in her career. The men’s prize goes to rower Marlon Colpaert. He won gold at the BK and also became European champion in the light men’s double sculls.

The trophy for the best youth athlete goes to Brent Deklerck, he is a gymnast at Willen is Kan Oostende. Deklerck won gold on the double mini trampoline during the World Age Group Games, which is regarded as the unofficial youth World Championship. He also performed well at the European Championships, but had to be satisfied with second place. Julie Van Hauwaert of TTC Zandvoorde was chosen for the best youth athlete, she won the Belgian junior title.

The best sports team was Filou Basketball Club Oostende. BCO has been continuously active in the highest league of basketball for 50 years and won an eleventh title in a row. The junior women’s team of KRNSO was chosen as the best youth sports team. Last year, the team was able to show off several gold medals at the Belgian Championship.

New trophy for special sports achievements

There is also a new prize this year, the prize for the most outstanding sports achievement. That prize went to G archer Ruben Vanhollebekke. He is a member of the Royal Hoofdgild Sint Sebastiaan Ostend and became European and world champion.

Special attention for Olympian Sandrine Tas

There was extra special attention for Sandrine Tas. The Ostend rollerblading athlete took part in the past Winter Olympics, where she competed in speed skating at four distances. She is a member of Zwaantjes Roller Club and is aiming for the mass start at the next winter games in Italy.
