Emma Meesseman was told that she had won the Sports Merit Trophy, just as her grandfather was being buried. Willy Tankrey was her biggest supporter.
“That’s life,” says Emma Meesseman. “I know that everyone unfortunately experiences that. I also know that my grandfather would have been proud. It is something we have to go through as a family, and then I am also lucky that I play in a team that knows me very well and is super sweet on a personal level. I am well surrounded in that regard.”
You can only receive the trophy for sports merit once in your career. Meesseman is also the first basketball player to receive the trophy.
“Super special, if you look at all the names they have already received. I never had any expectations for it. I was a bit surprised at that moment. But I think I will only enjoy this later once I realize that I have been given this one. That is crazy, because I play in a team sport. This award goes to all the Cats, because without them I don’t do anything on the field. It is certainly a great honor.”
