Emergency shelter removed from Petten, but staying in the municipality: shelter will be located in Schagen East

Only two weeks ago it was announced that emergency shelter for asylum seekers would be leaving Petten, but a new location for emergency crisis shelter has now been found within the municipality of Schagen: in Schagen East. According to the municipality, this was chosen because this is the only place in Schagen that the municipality owns.

The crisis emergency shelter is available from January 1 and is currently valid for one year. The shelter can accommodate a maximum of 250 asylum seekers. COA manages the location. The intention is for this to be converted into permanent emergency shelter for the next five years.

While there will be a tent/pavilion for asylum seekers in the coming year, special housing units will be set up at a permanent emergency shelter. The municipality emphasizes that no final decision has yet been made about the arrival of emergency shelter. The COA will use the coming period to prepare the permit application.

“This is an unexpected and drastic decision for our residents. I understand that very well”

Mayor Marjan van Kampen

“COA still faces a major challenge in receiving asylum seekers,” says Schagen mayor Marjan van Kampen, also chairman of the North Holland North Safety Region. “I think it is very important that we as a municipality contribute to relieve the pressure on the shelters. This is an unexpected and drastic decision for our residents. I understand that very well. That is why I would like to discuss with them what is to be done. to happen.”
