Emergency ordinance at the Tata Steel site due to Greenpeace climate action

An emergency ordinance applies to the Tata Steel site from 12 noon on Friday to 7 a.m. Monday morning. The municipality of Velsen has that on Friday announced. The measure prohibits climate activists from entering the site. According to the municipality, “the risks are great” if activists do go onto the site because certain areas are “very dangerous due to the activities that take place here”.

Greenpeace has announced a ‘mass action’ for Saturday. According to mayor Frank Dales, the activists plan to break through the fences of Tata Steel and enter the site. According to Dales, this is “potentially (life) dangerous”. Greenpeace has already set up a camp near Tata Steel on Friday morning, where the climate activists will spend the night after being “prepared” for Saturday’s action.

The emergency ordinance prohibits anyone around the Tata Steel site from carrying items that can be used to enter the site. This concerns, for example, ladders, boats, barrels, scissors or pliers. In addition, no open fire is allowed near the site. A spokesperson for Greenpeace told ANP news agency that the action will continue despite the emergency ordinance. “Greenpeace has more than fifty years of experience in peaceful campaigning. This action is necessary to put an end to the dangerous clouds of poison that Tata Steel is spreading.”
