Emergency care during carnival: head wounds, alcohol poisoning, aggression

Carnival always means crowds in the emergency department (ED) of Brabant hospitals. Most hospitals were mainly attended by carnival revelers who had been drinking too deeply or had suffered injuries as a result. Although it was less busy in some places than last year.

It was relatively quiet at the Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital in Tilburg on Saturday with nine injured carnival goers. The biggest crowds were on Sunday, the day of the parade in Tilburg. “They had to work extremely hard in the emergency department,” says the spokesperson. That day, 32 carnival revelers entered due to excessive alcohol consumption, injuries or a combination thereof.

According to the spokesperson, this crowd was on top of the extreme crowds in recent days because there were many people with respiratory infections. “In total we had 125 patients per day this weekend.” To cope with the crowds, extra staff was deployed.

At the Máxima Medical Center (MMC) in Veldhoven it was busy in the ER, but not exceptionally busy. “It was comparable to a busy weekend, except that the people who came in were dressed a bit more cheerfully,” the spokesperson said. The injuries were in line with what you can expect during carnival, for example when people fall due to alcohol consumption. The MMC operated with a regular line-up.

Aggressive patients
No additional staff has been deployed at the Bravis in Roosendaal and Bergen op Zoom. It was not extremely busy, but employees were bothered by a number of aggressive patients on Friday night.

Since Friday evening, a total of 23 carnival goers arrived at the Bravis with alcohol poisoning. Some of those patients were also injured. A total of eight people were in the emergency department with a head injury. “This is approximately the same as in previous years,” says the spokesperson.

Quiet carnival
It was relatively quiet at the Elkerliek in Helmond this weekend. A total of eighteen carnival goers visited the emergency room, all with complaints due to too much alcohol. According to the spokesperson, this is slightly less than last year.

The Jeroen Bosch Hospital in Den Bosch announces that it will take stock after carnival.
