The German handball players lose the game for third place and thus the bronze medal at the home European Championships. In the last game of the tournament, two players in particular were particularly impressive.
“We threw very poorly in the first half,” said national coach Alfred Gislason on the ARD microphone: “But a huge compliment to the team, we were on it several times in the second half.” The Icelander wants to continue his work at the DHB. “I signaled that I would be happy to do that, but ultimately it’s not my decision,” he emphasized at the press conference after the game.
“In the end it wasn’t enough”
Captain Johannes Golla found fourth place at the European Championships in his own country to be “very ungrateful”. What particularly bothered him was his team’s use of chances: “In the end it wasn’t enough. Our weak point is that we despair of the goalkeeper in tight games.” Andreas Palicka had a really great day in the Swedes’ goal.
Golla made it clear: “We are proud that we have reached the semi-finals.” But: “Today the disappointment outweighs the disappointment,” said the 26-year-old.
Instead of the hoped-for winter fairy tale, the DHB selection suffered its third European Championship defeat in a row. The tournament therefore ended with a bitter disappointment. The German team had already lost out against Croatia and Denmark.
Nevertheless, the team showed a courageous performance against Sweden. Two players even managed to convince completely in the defeat. You can read about which two actors they were here or in the photo show above.
