EM in England | World footballer Alexia Putellas is out for Spain

Big shock for Germany’s EM group opponents Spain: world footballer Alexia Putellas has suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in her left knee and has to pause for a long time, the Spanish association announced.

The 28-year-old FC Barcelona midfielder sustained the injury in training on July 5, and a diagnosis in a London hospital has now provided clarity. It will be a heavy blow for Spain, who play Germany on July 12 in Brentford, London. Alexia is the central figure in the Spanish team. In January of this year, she was named World Player of the Year 2021 after winning the Champions League, league and cup treble with Barca.

Also this year she won the championship with the club from Catalonia. Olympique Lyon had prevailed in the Champions League final, but with eleven goals they were the top scorer of the premier class season. Last week she was the first Spaniard to reach 100 caps.

The Spanish title candidate will start the European Championship against Finland on July 8 in Milton Keynes (6 p.m./ZDF and DAZN).
