EM in England | Scorer Popp: “Incredibly happy, incredibly proud”

Question: How much are you looking forward to meeting England striker Beth Mead, who also has six goals? And how excited are you to become the top scorer?

Answer: I benefit enormously from the girls. Of course, that makes me very happy and proud that I get these opportunities to sink these balls at all. That I’ve managed to get back to that point together with the coaching team over the last few weeks. It’s not my first goal now to say I really want to be top scorer. The first goal is clearly to win the European title. If the icing on the cake is then put on it, then of course it would be nice.

Question: What does it mean to be standing here after this injury?

Answer: You could see it with my very first goal here, but also in the other games, that I’m a bit more emotional than I might have been before. Of course I know what kind of path I’ve left behind. Then standing here and having the opportunity to perform like this, thank God to be fit at the right moment – that makes me very, very proud, of course. I also have to say a very, very big thank you to everyone who was involved I’ve gone down this path. I’m incredibly happy that I can play here and that we made it to the final.

Question: What is the difference between footballer Alex Popp before and after this serious injury?

Answer: To be honest, I feel like I’m experiencing all of this much, much more right now. Enjoy the moments much more. And – yes – appreciate football even more than before. I really appreciate being able to stand here again.
