EM in England | Schüller on the way back to the DFB team

With Lea Schüller in the squad, but without Almuth Schult, Germany’s footballers are going into the quarter-finals of the European Championship against Austria.

The goalscorer from FC Bayern Munich did the final training after her corona quarantine, the substitute goalkeeper from VfL Wolfsburg was absent due to a fever. This was confirmed by national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg at the press conference before the game on July 21 (9 p.m. CEST/ARD and DAZN) at the Brentford Community Stadium.

The 54-year-old spoke of 22 players in her squad of 23 who could play. With Schult it is like this: “Should there be a scenario where we need them, it would be possible.” This would be the case if regular keeper Merle Frohms or her colleague Ann-Karin Berger were to fail.

Voss-Tecklenburg said of Schüller’s situation: “Today it will last more than 60 minutes, then we will consult again.” Sometimes you can “overcome your weaker self quite well, then fitness may not play a role, but willpower. And there’s no question that she has a great will.”

Bundesliga top scorer Schüller had only been released from quarantine two days earlier after a positive corona test. Captain Alexandra Popp had last played for Schüller striker. The 31-year-old from Wolfsburg scored a headed goal in all three preliminary round games.

The winner of the neighborhood duel will play the winner of the match between France and holders Netherlands on 27 July for a place in the final on 31 July at Wembley Stadium.
