EM in England | Schüller back on the field: DFB women defy the heat

First rub it in vigorously! At almost 40 degrees, the German soccer players started preparing for the quarter-finals of the European Championship against Austria.

“We’re going to train a bit shorter than usual today. Short and sweet, but we’ll do that two days before the game anyway,” announced assistant coach Britta Carlson on the grounds of Grasshoppers Rugby Football Club in Brentford. Goal scorer Lea Schüller was there for the first time since her positive corona test.

Carlson: “Lea is on the right track”

The 24-year-old from FC Bayern Munich only did the warm-up training with her colleagues, after which there were individual exercises. “Lea still has her final exams today, but she’s on the right track. We’re waiting for the results,” said Carlson. The recently injured Bayern duo of Lina Magull and Sydney Lohmann also trained with the team again.

Substitute goalkeeper Almuth Schult was missing. “Almuth wasn’t doing so well this morning. It’s out today, but it’s nothing bad now. All tests are negative,” said Carlson about the 31-year-old from VfL Wolfsburg.

Schüller was isolated from the team at the team hotel for almost a week and tested negative for the first time on Monday. The 40-time national player (26 goals) and Bundesliga top scorer last season (16) missed both the 2-0 win against Spain and the 3-0 win against Finland in the preliminary round. It is currently unclear whether she will be back in the DFB squad against Austria on Thursday (9 p.m. CEST/ARD and DAZN).
