EM in England | Gwinn and Freigang before the start: “Very good energy in the team”

The national players Giulia Gwinn and Laura Freigang are convinced of the strength of their team before the start of the European Championship against Denmark.

The duo appeared optimistic and in a good mood at a joint press conference in London’s Brentford district. “There’s just pure anticipation. We have very, very good energy in our team,” said 23-year-old Gwinn from FC Bayern Munich.

The claim of a German national team is always “to play for the title” – even if they do not belong to the group of top favourites. The players are highly motivated and would be happy to “advertise our football,” Gwinn continued.

“We always give our best anyway”

Striker Freigang from Eintracht Frankfurt thinks it’s “really cool that not everyone is counting on us. The most important thing is that we’re convinced of our own quality – and we definitely are,” said the 24-year-old. “We know that we can and want to get everything with the team. We always do our best anyway.”

Gwinn scored the winning goal in the 1-0 win against China at the start of the 2019 World Cup in France. “Of course, that was something very, very special. One just hopes that this can be the case again,” she said, adding with a view to release: “If it doesn’t work for me, then maybe for Laura.”

While Gwinn is considered a full-back before the record European champions’ game against Denmark on July 8 (9 p.m. / ZDF and DAZN), Freigang has already made friends with her role as a joker: “I realize that in the first game I won’t play from the start. When I get minutes, I want to give it my all. I take my role as a support very, very seriously.”
