After her positive corona test last week, England national coach Sarina Wiegman has to wait and see whether she can look after her team again on Wednesday in the quarter-finals of the European Women’s Football Championship against Spain in the stadium.
“I feel good, I’m ready, but I have to wait,” Wiegman said on Tuesday. “Of course I’m hopeful. But we’ll see what happens.”
Wiegman had tested positive for the corona virus on July 15 and was only able to watch England’s 5-0 win against Northern Ireland on television. Since then, she has stayed in contact with her supervisory staff and the players via video – she followed the training from afar with a mask. “We know that if it doesn’t work out, I’ll be there in a different way,” said the trainer. “We have learned over the last few years that you can also work effectively in other ways if you adapt to the situation.”
In addition to Wiegman, substitute keeper Hannah Hampton also tested positive. Defender Lotte Wubben-Moy missed the 8-0 win against Norway because of a corona infection. “When there’s a positive test result, we have to be agile and creative and work with those who are fit,” Wiegman said. The Dutch woman emphasized that they had been prepared. “It’s very unfortunate, you don’t want that, but everyone knows what to do.”
