The German U17 juniors were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship after a thrilling penalty-kick thriller.
The selection of coach Marc-Patrick Meister was eliminated in the Haberfeld Stadium in Rishon LeZion in Israel despite a 2-0 lead in the duel from the point in the end with 3: 4 on penalties against France.
After regulation time it was 1:1 (1:1). Tom Saettel from Racing Straßburg deservedly put the French in the lead (19th minute). Nelson Weiper from FSV Mainz 05 equalized with a lob before the break (38′).
In the semifinals on Sunday, Spain or Portugal are the opponents for the French. The final will take place in Netanya on June 1st.
In 2020 and 2021, the tournaments in this age group were canceled due to the corona pandemic. Before that, the German selection was eliminated in the preliminary round in 2018 and 2019. Germany celebrated its last U17 title in 2009.
