Elverdinge residents want a cycle path to Zuidschote

The neighborhood has written a letter to the city council and a petition is circulating with about 100 signatures. Johan Couchez: “I have to say that most people were willing to sign because they think it is necessary to have a cycle path here. They experience the dangers of Steenstraat.”

Very heavy trucks are not allowed to drive here, but they do anyway. However, there is a bicycle junction on the road. As part of the supra-local cycle route network, Ypres receives subsidies for a cycle path, but to meet all requirements, parking lanes and gardens would have to disappear.

Emmily Talpe, mayor of Ypres: “I’m talking about that actually. I think safety is a priority. And of course expropriation also means that we have to release money for that. The mayor of Ypres therefore acknowledges the problem, but this legislature no longer has a budget. It is therefore something for the next multi-year plan.
