The prime van Elton John’s career was in the 1970s, but he remained an artist of unprecedented stature after that. In 2018, Elton announced a sizable farewell tour of more than three hundred performances worldwide. That tour is appropriately named Farewell Yellow Brick Road† to his immensely popular album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
Book and movie
The film was part of the completion of Elton John’s career as an artist rocket man, in which he did not play himself, but in which he did participate and in which his life was more or less summarized. In addition, there was an autobiographical book called Me, Elton John from. And now it’s his 75th birthday! And since we think the flamboyant looks are perhaps the best thing about the best man, we take a look back at Elton’s most memorable outfits.
The first outfit that definitely deserves a spot in this list is his bee look. In 1974 Elton performed like this in Watford, in yellow and black, the club colors of FC Watford. Elton was director of that football club for a while. And what screams yellow-black more than a bee? The huge sunglasses (bee eyes) top it off. Delicious!
Elton John aka sir Elton John, is originally from England. Yet he does not turn his hand for a over the top American outfit. We see this, for example, during his concerts in London in 1976: there he wore a bright blue, shiny jacket and red and white striped, also shiny pants. It almost seems as if he has had the American flag transformed into an outfit.
There isn’t always a logical explanation behind Elton John’s outfits. Sometimes he wore the most flamboyant suits without any explanation. His outfit above might just fall into that category. On the set of The Muppet Show, Elton performed his number Crocodile Rock on. Would he have associated the crocodile with a bird of paradise? Who’s to say…
This 1984 outfit is a definite nod to the outfit Elton John wore in the clip of I’m still standing, one of his biggest hits. The clip is largely set on the beach, so the hat type and sailor-style shirt are an appropriate choice. Lovely summers too.
Like outfit three on this list, this outfit falls into the “particularly flamboyant, without any explanation” category. At a concert in California, Elton imagined himself a true superstar, complete with bright pink Elvis-goes-extra-wig. The sunglasses seem to represent a kind of shooting star, which of course goes well with the black jacket full of gold stars and dots.
Nowadays Elton John goes through life a little more ordinary, but he still pulls out cool jackets and trendy sunglasses for concerts. Such was the case at this Louisiana concert earlier this year, where he wore a floral-patterned tailcoat with all kinds of sequins and shimmers on the collar. He completes the outfit with bright red sunglasses with diamonds: typical Elton!
