Last Sunday evening, June 25th, was a special one at the Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, England. During the performance of Elton John, who ended the music event as a headliner, the Brit commemorated the late singer George Michael. Michael would have turned 60 on Sunday.
With an emotional performance of the song “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me,” which Elton John once sang in a duet with George Michael, he paid tribute to his former companion. “He was my friend, an inspiration and today would have been his 60th birthday – I dedicate this song to him and all the wonderful music he left us,” John introduced the 1991 hit. He also dubbed the ex-Wham! singer “one of Britain’s most fantastic singers, songwriters and artists.”
In a spine-chilling moment, a photo of George Michael, who was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in May 2023, was shown on the LED screen during the performance. The pop star achieved iconic status in the 1980s with hits like “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and later “Careless Whisper.” On December 25, 2016, Michael passed away from her failure. He was 53 years old.
