No standard wedding photos, but real works of art. That is what Els Korsten from Den Bosch tries to make of her wedding reports. This is noticed not only by the bridal couples for whom she works, but also during the ‘Masters of Wedding Photography’. On Thursday she won the best wedding photographer in the Benelux for the second time. The best compliment? “Many bridal couples find my photos real works of art.”
“It is a great honor to be named the best wedding photographer by your colleagues. It still feels so unreal, this is really cool! I can call myself, just like in 2021, the best wedding photographer in the Benelux,” says Els. pride. The international competition is held by Masters of Wedding Photography. Photographers were allowed to submit a number of photos every quarter. The best were recognized with an award. Els won fifteen.
Enough about the match. What kind of wedding photographer is Els? “I started as a cow photographer twenty years ago. At that time, there were many shows and competitions with cows. But couples also got married in the agricultural sector and they came to me.”
“I concentrate on unexpected moments.”
Over the years, Els built her own unique style. “No standard photos of the bridal couple. But I concentrate on unexpected moments. That is my strength. I call them in-between moments and they are part of the report of the bridal couple. I call it documentary style. It could be someone getting in the car, someone walking away, children doing something special or something with pets.”
Els wants to be prepared at every wedding. “I visit each bridal couple in advance. I want to get to know them well in a short time. Who are they? What do they like? What are their interests? I want to know as much as possible about them, even the little things. Of course, I want I also know the factual things: how will the day go? This way I prepare so that the report completely suits them.”
She works almost incognito. “I often hear from bridal couples that they did not feel my presence. Even though I was there at all times, even at the moments they did not expect.”
She has to think about the best compliment ever. “Many people think my photos are real works of art and hang them in their living room. That makes me proud.” In 2021 I was also photographer of the year. That immediately resulted in a nice job. “Then very quickly I had a wedding on a beautiful island. Who knows, maybe something beautiful will come along again.”
