Elon Musk mocks Green Day for changing lyrics to “American Idiot”

The band spoke out against Donald Trump’s “MAGA” slogan, which the Tesla founder didn’t like at all.

Elon Musk has feuded with pop-punk band Green Day after they changed the lyrics to “American Idiot” during their New Year’s Eve performance. To ring in 2024, the band played as part of ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.”

The 2004 hit originally contained criticism of then US President George W. Bush’s decision to go to war in Iraq as a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11th. To reflect today’s times, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong rewritten the lyrics “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda”. The reference to Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan angered fans of the former president and also prompted Elon Musk to mock the group on X.

Green Day as a political band

The band’s rejection of Trump has been publicly stated many times. At the 2016 American Music Awards, they chanted “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA.” Last year, Green Day sold merchandise featuring a police mugshot of the former president and donated the proceeds to charity.

Green Day will release their new album “Saviors” on January 19th and will play a tour of the same name this year. The group will also be coming to Europe in 2024. In addition to German festivals such as Rock am Ring and Rock im Park, Green Day will play two other gigs in Germany: at the Hamburg Trabrennbahn and at the Berlin Waldbühne. They are supported here by the Donots.

The Germany dates at a glance:

  • June 7th – Nuremberg, Rock in the Park
  • June 8th – Nürburgring, Rock am Ring
  • June 10th – Berlin, Waldbühne
  • June 11th – Hamburg, trotting track
