Criticism of Full Self Driving

Since Tesla announced about two years ago that it would do away with the radar system in its vehicles and instead switch to the “Vision Only” concept, Tesla’s driver assistance system has often been criticized. Again and again there were reports and scandals about accidents that arose in connection with the software.

Tesla’s advanced “Autopilot” version “Full Self Driving”, which is still just a driver assistance system, even if the name could convey that the vehicle drives autonomously, has also come under criticism. After several incidents and complaints, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigated the beta test version that US drivers can use. As a result, the US electric car manufacturer had to carry out an online update for more than 360,000 vehicles with the test version of the software in the USA.

It is possible that there will soon be innovations for Tesla’s driver assistance system. In any case, a hacker is said to have discovered a secret mode for Tesla’s Full Self Driving.

Hacker discovered secret mode

The Twitter user “@greentheonly”, who, according to The Verge, is said to have discovered secret functions and innovations in Tesla’s vehicles in the past before they were published, has tested the mode and shared his experiences with the community.

On the short message service Twitter, he reported his impressions after almost 600 miles with FSD Beta 11.4.3 with the so-called “Elon Mode”, which he said is “a special AP mode” in which there is no nagging .” Braking is “less severe” according to greentheonly, and the hacker explained that he likely “didn’t fully explore some other changes under the hood”.

Vehicle no longer “nags”.

What he found, however, is that while FSD users often have to confirm their attention to the vehicle by, for example, moving the steering wheel, which some Tesla owners find annoying, greentheonly reported that the FSD software in his experiment with the Elon Mode did not demand attention from the driver. The vehicle drives autonomously without warning the driver to touch the steering wheel or direct their gaze to the road.

In addition, greentheonly informed in the Twitter thread that the system apparently still changes lanes arbitrarily. Most of the problems he had were mainly due to myopia, which led to unnecessary lane changes. “If you let the car run wild, other people’s street hype would be a real problem,” says greentheonly. Another problem is lane changes, which are necessary to get past slower cars, but which the vehicle cannot carry out.

Among other things, he also noted that while Tesla is working on the problems with potholes and road debris, these would pose real dangers today.

Without the necessary attention, defects would no longer bother so much

On the things that greentheonly found disturbing, he explained: “If the car didn’t need my attention I would just plan for a late arrival as much as possible and ignore a lot of the flaws that are very annoying at the moment. They’re just that way It’s annoying because I actually have to look after the car and I notice them because they differ greatly from my driving style.” In his opinion, this could also explain “the flood of people who claim that the car works very well and that they are satisfied”. “Maybe they like to drive slowly and are content with random lane changes and the like,” says the hacker. “If I just read a book/website I wouldn’t notice”.

Whether this mode will be available to regular owners at some point in the future remains to be seen. The Tesla boss said that “nudge-free driving” would come Elon Musk according to The Verge, however, it was actually announced in December.
