Ellen (53): ‘I don’t shy away from having some botox injected twice a year’ | Stories behind the news

Do you feel as young/old as you are?

“No, I feel a lot younger. Honestly, I feel like I’m only in my mid-thirties. I think this is largely due to my active lifestyle. Sitting on the couch is not for me. I am always working out or having a drink with friends. My husband and I also love to travel. I go to Ibiza at least two or three times a year and try to do a lot of city trips. That is the great advantage of having your own business. I can go on holiday as often as I want.”

Do you have a beauty secret?

“Because of my work as a hairdresser, I look at my own reflection all day long. That’s why I think it’s important to look neat. I exercise at least six hours a week and pay a lot of attention to my hair and makeup. I also don’t shy away from getting some botox injections twice a year. That makes me happy, so why not?”

Do people estimate you at the right age?

“Never, actually, but I think that’s very unimportant. My friends are between thirty and sixty years old. I get along with everyone and will never ask anyone’s age. I also hate it when people ask how old I am. What does it matter? It says nothing about someone’s attitude to life. I think that is much more important.”

What do you like best about yourself?

“My positivity, I always try to be there for everyone. I firmly believe in the proverb: whoever does good, meets good. That’s how I try to live my life.”

“In appearance, I am most pleased with my hair. As a hairdresser, it’s my business card, so I make sure it always looks neat. I color it every five to six weeks and wear extensions, which makes it nice and long and full. I wouldn’t measure myself a short haircut so quickly. When I’m seventy years old, I think I’ll still have the same hair.”

What are you less happy about?

“It may sound conceited, but I am not dissatisfied with anything. I think it’s a shame to focus on the negative. What’s the point? Of course I also had enough insecurities as a teenager, but now I am firmly in my shoes. Thirteen years ago my father took his own life. Since then I have started to look at life differently. I try to enjoy every moment and be content with what I have.”

What keeps you young?

“Always be active. I can’t imagine sitting on the couch on a Saturday night. You hardly ever find me on the couch. I work Friday from nine o’clock in the morning until nine o’clock in the evening and on Saturday I also close the case at four o’clock in the afternoon. After this I immediately jump in the shower and go out with friends. I think it’s a waste of my life if I just sit at home and try to make every day a party. That is really my secret.”

Are you where you wish you were?

“Certainly not. It is my dream to open my own extensions bar in the center of Rotterdam, but because of corona this has become a long-term plan. First I have to get my barbershop back on track. Personally, I am very satisfied. I have wonderful children, amazing friends and a lovely husband I’ve known since I was 15. Of course, our relationship has ups and downs. We have also fallen in love with someone else. Yet we always kept fighting for each other.”

Do you have a life lesson?

“Treat others as you would like to be treated. If you give a lot of love, you get a lot of love in return.”
