Elizabeth II wished that Camilla, the wife of Prince Charles, became queen consort
After Charles ascends the British throne, his wife will be called “Queen Camilla”. Thus, Elizabeth resolved a long-standing ambiguity regarding the future title of the Duchess of Cornwall.
Queen Elizabeth II has expressed her desire that Camilla, the wife of her son, Prince Charles, be crowned queen consort when he becomes king. The Queen announced this in her messages to the people of Britain, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne.
“When <...> my son Charles becomes king, I know that you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you gave me; and my sincere desire is that when the time comes, Camilla would be known as the queen consort <...>, ”the queen’s address says.
The title of queen consort means that the king’s wife has equal social status with him and bears the female equivalent of his monarchical title. However, she does not have the political and military powers of the regent.
