Eline (33) dies of altitude sickness while trekking in Bolivia: “She was given coca leaf paste instead of being advised to descend immediately” | Ghent

In the evening she played a game of chess against two other tourists, which she won each time. She wrote in her diary that her arms felt stiff. “Perhaps from the adrenaline of chess,” she wrote. An hour later Eline Verhees (33) was dead. The young girl from Ghent climbed the mountains in Bolivia with her love, got altitude sickness and died from the consequences. Her left behind partner Marijke pays tribute. And wants to warn other travelers about the dangers of altitude sickness.
