Elina Kanerva tells Iltalehti about their wedding day, and how she plans to remember her late husband.
More than a year ago, a politician Ilkka Kanerva passed away at the age of 74 in his own home in Turku. For him and Elina to Kanerva today, May 11, would have been their fourth wedding anniversary.
On her private Instagram account, Kanerva shares the best memories of their wedding day and talks about how much she misses him.
– I remember when it was decided to get married, how you rushed, that everything had to happen within two weeks. You booked us a church, a priest and a wedding venue. I had to send invitations to my relatives. You said that those who are suitable for the day will come and the others will then be taken out to eat sometime later, Kanerva begins in his publication.
– It’s wonderful to remember all of these now, even if I wish I could share this important moment and day with you here together. However, I feel that you are very close and you know how much I miss and love you now and always. Oh well, until then and have a wonderful wedding day somewhere, Kanerva says at the end.

In her publication, Kanerva mentioned, among other things, that the politician had a speech at Turku Castle on the evening of his wedding day, which could not be postponed. So the newlyweds left the wedding venue straight to the castle, where Ilkka amused the crowd by telling them that he came straight from his own wedding.
Now Kanervo explains to Ilalehte why the speaking opportunity could not be cancelled.
– We didn’t want to tell anyone about our wedding day in advance, so he couldn’t tell the event organizer that he couldn’t come and speak. We then went there and received great honors. We received congratulations and flowers, but we didn’t really change, because they didn’t know about our wedding day in advance, Kanerva opens to Iltalehte.
– In the end, it was quite nice, although in a way it was also a little funny that he had a speaking opportunity on the same day, Kanerva adds.
Kanerva says that, unfortunately, today she can’t remember their wedding day more than the Instagram post.
– I would really like to visit Ilka’s grave, but I live so far away these days that I can’t suddenly go there. Of course, when I go to Turku, I always visit his grave, says Kanerva.
